FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS AND DUTIES
The Indian constitution lays down certain rights and duties for the people of India to live a good life and acts as responsible citizens. The rights of the citizens are known as fundamental rights. These are six in number. The duties of the citizen are known as fundamental duties. It is important to remember that the rights and the duties go together. Duties without rights and rights without duties have no meaning.
FUNDAMENTAL RIGHTS
Right to Equality : The right to equality means equality before law. There should be no discrimination on the basis of sex, caste, religion or place of birth.
Right to Freedom of Expression : Every citizen has the right to express his or her own views.
Right Against Exploitation : It means no one can be forced to work without wages. Child labour has been prohibited by the government.
Right to Freedom of Religion : It means that every citizen has the right to choose the religion he or she wants to follow. All religions are to be treated equally by the government.
Cultural and Educational Rights : Every group has the right to follow its own customs and traditions. They also have right to set up their own schools, temples and mosques in any part of the Indian Territory.
Right to Education : It provides every child (6-14 years), an opportunity to get education. Government provides free and compulsory education for children up to 14 years of age.
Right to Constitutional Remedies : It means that every one has the right to ask for justice in the court of law, if his or her Fundamental Rights have been violated by any person or office in India.
Fundamental rights can be suspended at the times of emergency. In 1975, some of these rights were suspended for sometime by the government of India.

As a citizen of India, we are expected to perform certain duties. Some of these duties are:

- Obey the constitution and respect its ideals and institutions, the National Flag and the National Anthem.
- Follow the nobel ideas that inspired our national struggle for freedom.
- Protect the sovereignty, unity and integrity of India.
- To render national service which called upon to do so.
- To preserve the rich cultural heritage.
- Promote hormony and brotherhood amongst all the people of India.
- Protect and improve the natural environment including forest, rivers and wildlife.
